In 1/2B, we love our weekly music sessions and the collaborative nature of them; learning new songs, using percussion instruments and boomwhackers to create music together, all with a different role.  We have enjoyed watching performances of orchestras and bands (like Mumford and Sons, our Musicians of the month) – a perfect example of ‘One body with many parts’.  We have learnt the different types of instruments, what they sound make and how they work together to make a whole piece of music.  Our recent work on ‘Pitch’ has developed our understanding of how voices can be instruments collaborating to make a lovely sound. 

At ACE, we love to sing and truly understand the power of music, collaboration and performance. On Thursday evening, our choir took part in a joint concert with Highfield Primary and Brodetsky Primary, hosted at Highfield. It was a joyful celebration from start to finish. We are proud to give our children a voice, encouraging them to listen, reflect, share their ideas, and act as peace-builders. Each school performed individually before joining together for a powerful finale that truly wowed us all. It was an uplifting evening and a wonderful reminder of the harmony that music and our children can create.

We also received some lovely feedback from one of the organisers ‘It was a brilliant evening and it was a real pleasure to watch the faces of all the children clearly enjoying singing their songs. Your choir was really impressive and your choice of songs was great. From where I was sitting, I could see a number of the children in the other choirs singing along to your songs too! The finale of “The Power of my Voice” was especially appropriate for the occasion.’

Year 3 have been exploring the composer Sergei Prokofiev and delving into his piece ‘Peter and the Wolf’. They have discovered how this piece of music tells a story is meant to be played alongside a narration. They spent some of today’s lesson researching his life on the Chromebooks.

4C had the pleasure of Mr Ash teaching them Samba! Pupils learnt all about rhythm and the different instruments involved in Samba to produce a class piece.

This afternoon 3H had the exciting chance to play the ukulele! They had a brilliant time learning about the parts of the ukulele, the string names and how to strum. In the autumn term Year 3 have been exploring chime bars. Here they are learning two different songs.

The first song is called ‘Elevator’. Half of the class are playing the instrument and the other half are singing the song.

Here they are singing the song ‘once a man’ and playing the chime bars as a class at the same time.

They worked hard over the first half term to be able to handle the instrument correctly, play notes in a tune and sing along!

In Music this week, the children had great fun exploring rhythm through a creative partner activity. Each child was given a set of rhythm cards and tasked with arranging them to create a short rhythm pattern. They then challenged their partner to clap out the rhythm they had created. After a few turns, the pairs swapped roles, giving everyone a chance to compose and perform.

Year 3 had the opportunity to experience an artsong music workshop from Leeds Lieder this afternoon. They learnt that Leider means artsong and understood how important music is in creating an image in your mind.

They discussed musical vocabulary pitch and dynamics.

They also practiced being conductors to change the dynamics of the piano as shown in the pictures.

Lastly, Year 3 worked together to compose a song.

This afternoon KS2 took part in a music assembly led by Will. We learnt about the different parts of a ukulele, how to strum and playing chords on a ukulele.

Will also showed us a guitar and an electric guitar.

We sang pop songs along with the ukulele and played guess the song.
